Reviews are Solid Gold

Indigo Bakery, owned by Melanie Hein and partner Michael Caldwell, is tucked in the storied shadow of the Rice Museum in Georgetown. It is one gem of a bakery and treat shop; just crossing the threshold feels a bit like breezing into a well-tended jewelry box. The color scheme is luscious with deep blues, shades of purple and lots of white. Sheet rock walls were ripped out to reveal the original brick, and furnishings include cast-off antiques reimagined with color. Tin ceiling tiles add more flair.

Up front, a pastry case will rattle your willpower. (Life is short. Eat the cake.) In the back, a welcoming sitting area overlooks the Harborwalk and the Sampit River. In between, an expansive window to the kitchen allows guests to watch delicious magic take shape.

While Michael manages “front of the house” details, Melanie says she’s happier than she’s ever been – scratch-baking in the kitchen. For her, Indigo Bakery is a dream come true. She is passionate about quality, natural ingredients and natural ingredients. She especially loves baking and decorating wedding cakes and other special occasion cakes for any event anyone can dream up. Custom sugar cookies for client gifts, parties, showers and such is another of her favorite things to brainstorm and bake. “I really enjoy being a part of my customers’ major life events,” she said.

Reviews are solid gold. On any given day, the main case will feature a couple of cakes, a variety of cookies, as well as sweet and savory breakfast pastries. Here are just a couple of the favorites you’ll find often: the shop’s signature cookie is “Dad’s favorite.” Some call it the kitchen sink; Melanie and Michael call it “Dad’s Favorite.” An oatmeal cookie packed with cherries, raisins, cranberries, chocolate chips and four types of nuts – we call it delicious.

Another favorite is a chocolate cake smothered with rich chocolate buttercream. Occasionally, they scratch-make a different version of the same cake with fresh raspberry preserves. Other options include strawberry cake with fresh strawberry purée in the batter. The Triple Lemon Sunshine cake may be the best seller of all. Made with alternating layers of homemade lemon curd and lemon cream cheese frosting, it’s a sheer delight.

There’s so much to tell you about Indigo Bakery, but we have to stop here. For now, follow them on Facebook, and do call early to nail down your own customized baking orders!
